Country dancing
Oct 26th, 2006 at 5:53pm

Was anyone else here made to do country dancing at school? It didn't involve one bit of line dancing, more the join hands with your partner, skip around the hall in your plimsolls then make a chain of hands and skip through it one by one. I believe it may have been part of the curriculum back then.

Oh yes!  We had a country dancing club at junior school and practically every girl joined.  I refused in an act of rebellion, but felt really left out, so joined the following year - and got my Girl Guide country dance badge.

We had to do a dance called the Durham Reel and one called Trip To The Cottage.  I remember something called The Oxo Reel too.

We often did the same dances at the village barn dance.

Didn't have country dancing but we were made to learn maypole dancing, and perform at the mayday celebrations on the village green!

I can still remember how to do the 'Spider's Web' and the music that accompanied the dance!

As a Pagan I enjoy watching Maypole dancing. Many people don't realise it's actually fertility rite. The village near us has a May Day(Beltane) Fayre each year which is fun.

I do like the sound of Strip the Willow Ladybird!  Cheesy

Oh God yeah!  The time we all used to dread at school.  For the last weeks of PE in the run up to Christmas, the normal PE schedule was thrown out of the window and country dancing was brought in.  They made us do the same dances year after year.  I remember it always used to be to Billy Joel and "Uptown Girl" (bet you didn't know you can do country dancing to that) and 'King Of The Road'.

It could be quite fun!

My moment of glory was Stripping the Willow to 'Blue Suede Shoes' in the middle of Crewkerne, along with 50 other people.... Tongue Tongue

I want to be near you,
you're the one for me"

Oh good grief, i'd forgotten all about country dancing.  I used to like the dancing but hated the part where we were paired up with the boys, for some reason i used to get really shy  Embarrassed

We never did the maple dancing just the dancing around the school hall, i think i may have even been quite good at it, after i'd gotten over my shyness of course.

Oh God, yes I remember that one too!

"First couple separate, go out around the ring
Pass your partner coming out and pass them coming in
Honour your corner lady, promenade your own - OH!
I want to be near you.... " etc etc

Didn't realise I still remembered all the words!  Incidentally the tune is a well known French song called "Aupres de ma Blonde".

I think we did Strip The Willow at my friend's wedding - she got married in Scotland (being Scottish) and had a ceilidh.  Is there one called The Dashing White Sergeants too?

And who can forget The Gay Gordons!

Yep.

Strip The Willow done properly is quite a dangerous affair, and can result in serious injury!

One of the islands in Orkney has a dance almost peculiar to them, called Nine Pins, which makes STW look quite tame though... it's like a rugby match set to music.  Undecided Shocked

In some of the islands, dances are well-attended social events, and you can see children of 5 or so who can do all these old fashioned dances perfectly... it's actually very sweet to see.

The easiest way to lose you r dancing partner is to attempt the Gay Gordons...the dance usually ends up with a load of chaps in the middle of the floor looking lost...cos all the girls have given up and are dancing with each other!
